Hello, My name is Derya (Dee) I learnt to play the piano when I was in Primary School. I was taught by an extremely dedicated Teacher. At times the approach was quite intense and often seemed quite regimented. I learnt to play well, but did not necessarily agree - looking back in later life, by the way in which I was taught as a small child. In later years, this went on to influence me...in the way in which I would prefer to teach, by making my lessons enjoyable, fun and leaving my students wanting more!
After I left Junior school and having been taught by my first piano Teacher and achieving the early piano grades - I went on to successfully pass further piano examinations, with two additional private music Teachers. In later life I decided to share my musical talent and enthusiasm in playing music, by teaching Musical Keyboard with Piano techniques. Although I was keen to teach, I felt it was important to always make the student (despite age) feel completely comfortable and at ease! It is never too early or too late to learn, however - you can still feel slightly apprehensive - even at a more mature age, hence the importance of feeling comfortable with your Teacher.
I began teaching privately before my daughter was born; over thirty years ago and proceeded to successfully teach children and adults to play confidently and with competence! Although my lessons are extremely informative, I feel students are able to progress faster and achieve more accurately if their lessons are enjoyable and made' fun to learn!' "Who said theory, scales and practise cannot be fun?"
In the past I have played the piano in assemblies at an EBD School, which would house some children who would at times display quite challenging behaviour! Their interest and enthusiasm for singing alongside the piano would bring smiles, joy and a calming influence - which proved to be positive and extremely beneficial to obtaining a happier sense of equilibrium of mood. The children would also be encouraged to learn about the musical keyboard and I would therefore hold a Tutor group at the end of their school week as a reward. This would always encourage positivity amongst the children!
I once taught a young student to successfully read musical score (although it is a talent within itself) the student was only ever able to play music 'by ear'. The said mentioned student learnt to read music and has now become a successful music Teacher.
I taught another student to play the keyboard when he was young and although a 'quiet natured' student he always played with such confidence when his young fingers touched the keys! Once he was able to play competently, I would introduce accompaniment and rhythm! He was completely inspired by the assertive beats and dramatic tones! He went on to create a modern piece of Beat Bearing equipment which involves; sound, accompaniment and rhythm as part as his PHD research in the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) at Queens University, Belfast.
A more mature lady who was in her 70s, wanted to play the keyboard in her late Son's memory. He was a dedicated pianist and she did him proud! I taught this lady so that she too was able to play the songs her Son once played to her!
May I also mention; that for a number of years, I have also worked as a Learning and Support Assistant in a Special Needs School. I therefore have considerable experience working with children and adults who have Autism or Severe Learning Difficulties. Seeing everybody's love of music makes me appreciate the way in which I am inspired to teach.
